Four School Board seats are on the ballot during this upcoming midterm election (Primary 8/28/18, General 11/6/18). School Board members oversee a budget of nearly $3 billion for Hillsborough County Public Schools, the 8th largest school district in the country. The Hillsborough County School District is also the largest employer in the county with more than 26,000 employees. Members of the School Board are critical to local decisions about our children’s education and the priorities of our public school system.
It is critical to educate yourself and other families at your schools about the positions these candidates hold. They will serve 4 years on the school board and their decisions can have huge implications for our teachers, students, and community.
This summer, the Hillsborough County Council PTA/PTSA surveyed School Board candidates to get their views in writing to share with all of our members. Here are the answers candidates gave to 10 of the most pressing education questions facing our school district.
Hillsborough County School Board races were on the primary ballot for Districts 1, 2, 4 and 6. In Districts 2 and 4, a winner was declared as a single candidate received at least 51% of the vote. Districts 1 and 6 will move to a run-off on the November ballot. The map below outlines the District lines. District 6 is a county-wide seat. If you are unsure which District you fall into, please contact the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections office.
